Elon Musk Just Highlighted His Biggest Dilemma at Twitter

What is Elon Musk up to at Twitter? Over the weekend, just days after finalizing his purchase of the social-media platform, he retweeted to his 112.6 million followers an article containing baseless right-wing rumors about the vicious assault on the eighty-two-year-old husband of Nancy Pelosi . After assuring Twitter advertisers last week that he wouldn’t allow the social-media site to become a “hellscape,” the world’s richest man promptly raised fears of precisely this outcome. One interpretation is that the Pelosi retweet, one of about a dozen postings Musk made over the weekend, was simply Musk being Musk. He’s long revelled in using Twitter to cause controversy and attract attention. “Aren’t you entertained?” he said at a dinner with the Financial Times a few weeks back. “I play the fool on Twitter and often shoot myself in the foot and cause myself all sorts of trouble,” he explained. “I don’t know, I find it vaguely therapeutic to express myself on Twitter. It’s a way to...

‘Wendell and Wild’ is a Morbid and Magical Stop-Motion Nightmare

Image
Wendall and Wild (Netflix) Both morbid and magical, fashioned from bones and clay, Henry Selick’s stop-motion concoction puts the “ooh” back in “boo.” Film reviewer Asher Luberto notes, “This Netflix animated film is not a cartoon, like Frozen  or  The Lion King . Rather, in the mode of Selick’s previous features  Coraline  and  Nightmare Before Christmas , it’s a demonic adventure that tests the limits of what you can put into a kid’s movie. No one goes into a Selick production expecting Pixar, but this story of a girl who loses her parents is especially heavy on the adult themes, as well as the gothic imagery. If you thought  Coraline ‘s descent into wonderland was creepy, wait till you see Kat’s (Lyric Ross) descent into Satan’s nose.” Keegan-Michael Key plays Wendell and Jordan Peele voices Wild, two demons who live like slaves. Luberto reports that the influence of Peele, who cowrite screenplay, can be felt “from the banter to the s...

3900 Nebraska Avenue Northwest in Washington, DC and Swedish ambassador to the U.S. Karin Olofsdotter (Compass, Arizona State University) As Swedish officials confront a housing slump back home, some of their colleagues across the pond are betting that trophy residences can still command premium prices. The Swedish government has put its former ambassador’s residence in Washington, D.C., on the market for $19.5 million, the Wall Street Journal reported , making it the most expensive listing in the U.S. capital, according to the listing agent. 3900 Nebraska Avenue Northwest in Washington, DC (Compass) Set on 7 acres at 3900 Nebraska Avenue in the city’s American University Park neighborhood, the 12,000-square-foot mansion comes with seven bedrooms, but needs approximately $2 million of renovations and updates, according to Compass’ Cara Pearlman, who has the listing with fellow Compass agent TJ Morton. Montclair, NJ's mayor is a rising star. Could local scandals drag him back to earth?

Interrelated, snowballing local scandals in Montclair, New Jersey, could be a serious political liability for the township’s mayor, an up-and-comer in the Democratic Party — and even a contender for governor in 2025. That’s the view of some politics watchers in the Garden State who are trying to keep up with the events. In the latest of a series of controversies, Montclair Chief Financial Officer Padmaja Rao this month sued the municipality and its township manager, Tim Stafford. She claimed the manager subjected female department heads to bullying and toxic behavior for years, prompting some to leave their jobs. She doesn’t name Mayor Sean Spiller, or anyone besides Stafford as a target of the suit, but says she suffered retribution for trying to correct serious problems that tie back to the mayor and members of the Montclair Township Council. Rao describes a range of abusive conduct by the manager dating back to at least 2020 — from dismissing concerns about allegedly illeg...

The Man in the MAGA Middle

Image
Kevin McCarthy. Photo: Tom Brenner/The New York Times/REDUX Kevin McCarthy was the main attraction in the expansive downstairs of a McMansion in suburban Scranton one September evening where he managed to greet attendees, shake their hand, and offer just a moment of bonding before moving on to the next person who almost invariably had a name tag on their shirt and a glass of red wine in their hand. It’s a skill McCarthy has honed by criss-crossing the country over the past year and encouraging Republican donors to give even more money to help support their candidates, while giving an outline of what a Republican majority could do in 2023. His sales pitch includes old clichés (Joe Biden is Jimmy Carter) and a measured embrace of Donald Trump who was mentioned only twice and praised for foreign policy. Then he closes with what he thinks will be an appealing image to the crowd — Nancy Pelosi handing him the Speaker’s gavel next year. McCarthy had come to help Republican...

What else would be expected from the angel that is Dolly Parton? Her hits, obviously. “9 to 5” and “I Will Always Love You” are set to make an appearance in the special. Written by David Rambo, the special also includes choreography from Emmy Award-winning choreographer Kathryn Burns. It’ll be a do...

17th century log cabin for sale in New Jersey

Image
406 Swedesboro Road in Greenwich NJ (Google Maps) The Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776. But a log cabin for sale in New Jersey is more than a century older than the historic document. The home at 406 Swedesboro Road in Greenwich, Gloucester County is up for grabs once again, NJ.com reported . The one-acre property is being marketed for only $475,000. The log cabin is the oldest in the Western Hemisphere still standing in its original position, according to the listing. The 16-by-22 foot structure was built around 1638 by Finnish settlers. In addition to the cabin, an 1,800-square-foot, two-story Colonial home attached to the original cabin in the 1730s is also part of the listing. So is a 1930s-built machine shop, a four-car garage and a shed. The owner, Doris Rink, has made an annual habit out of trying to sell the property, reducing the asking price considerably since first listing it in 2015. The home was first offered for $2.9 million in 2015; it’s aski...

At least 146 dead, dozens more injured after crowd surge at Halloween festivities in Seoul

Image
SEOUL, South Korea — At least 146 people were killed and 150 others were injured in a stampede during Halloween festivities in Seoul, officials said of one of the biggest disasters in South Korea that will likely raise serious questions about public safety standards. The massive death toll is being tallied after people were crushed by a large crowd pushing forward on a narrow alley in Seoul’s Itaewon neighborhoods, a major leisure and night-life district in the capital. Choi Seong-beom, chief of Seoul’s Yongsan fire department, said the death toll could rise and that an unspecified number among the injured were in critical conditions following the stampede in Itaewon on Saturday night. He said that the bodies were being sent to hospitals or a gym, where bereaved family members could identify them. He earlier said most of the dead and injured are in their 20s. More than 1,700 response personnel from across the country were deployed, including about 520 firefighters and 1,100...
